A 9400 class 0-6-0 locomotive number 8460 with a goods train at Shap, Cumbria, 1945. The four mile climb to the top of Shap summit has a gradient of 1 in 75, and reaches 300 metres above sea level. Powerful locomotives, such as those in the Princess Coronation class were needed to pull trains up the slope. Shap was a popular place for railway photographers to take pictures because of the picturesque landscape.
