A passenger in a third class single berth sleeping car, 1956. Sleeping facilities for third class passengers had improved since 1948, when wash basins were slowly introduced into all berths as well as full sets of bedding. Nevertheless, the facilities were cramped compared to first class compartments and the compartments were sparsely decorated and furnished.
