A photograph of unemployed men and women in London, England, taken by Leslie Cardew for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1932. People queue in response to a job offer by the Regent Theatre, Euston Road, London. The queues are so large and the people so desperate for work that the police are present to keep order. By the end of 1930 there were over 2 million unemployed in Britain, with soup kitchens and hunger marches becoming a feature of urban life. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
