Manipulated image of Dali and Olivier, 26 April, 1955.
© NMeM / Daily Herald Archive / Science & Society Picture Library
A composite photograph of Spanish artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989) and British actor Sir Laurence Olivier (1907-1989), created by Lauder for the Daily Herald newspaper. Olivier looks off into the distance whilst Dali's head and shoulders seem to emerge from the pages of a book Olivier holds open. This photograph has been constructed from three other photographs taken at a press conference - one of Olivier with the book and the other two of Dali in differing poses. The Daily Herald staff joke on the reverse of this photograph that surrealist painter Dali must have bewitched the camera that produced this image.
