A photographic portrait of the scientist Charles Darwin [1809-1882] taken by Elliott & Fry. A revolutionary nineteenth century scientist, Darwin's influence continues to this day. Following his voyages on the H.M.S. Beagle, [1831-1836], Darwin developed his theories of evolution and natural selection. Anxious about the public response to his controversial ideas, he delayed releasing research for many years. 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life' was eventually published in 1859.
