Description

The experimental high-pressure compound steam locomotive No 10,000, known as the 'Hush Hush', pictured having arrived at King's Cross Station, London, 31 July 1930. Gresley (on the platform), is standing next to the loco crew – drivers J Gascoigne and R Eltringham, and firemen H A Brayson and J W Ritchie. The 10,000 was one of the locomotives used on the 'Flying Scotsman' service. Gresley (1876-1941) was Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London & North Eastern Railway, and was the foremost locomotive designer from 1911-1941.
