Chromolithograph by Ape of Fergusson (1808-1877). Fergusson revived the operation for cleft-palate, which had been unpopular for many years. He designed versions of surgical instruments such as bone forceps, lion forceps and the vaginal speculum. He promoted conservative surgery, the excision of a joint in preference to amputation of a limb. He was clinical professor of surgery at King's College Hospital, London, and wrote 'System of Practical Surgery' (1842). From the magazine 'Vanity Fair', Men of the Day, No 17. Dimensions: 312mm x 186mm.
