Description

Throat strap containing sound sensor, 1999. Sound sensor used by English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking (b 1942) to connect his voice synthesiser to a mobile phone. Although current computers are very capable of pronoucing words, they find word emphasis (through which meaning is often conveyed) difficult. However, Hawking's computer- generated voice has become recognised world-wide as uniquely his own.
