Born in Isleworth, Middlesex on 30 August 1915, he lectured at Oxford University before being appointed Professor of History at Leicester University in 1947, a position he maintained until retirement in 1975. He was joint editor of the Journal of Transport History from 1953 to 1973 and he played an important role in the establishment of the National Railway Museum, serving as chairman of the NRM Committee from 1981 to 1984.
