Description

Photograph showing boys on an educational visit underground at the colliery of Newton Chambers & Co Ltd in Thorncliffe, near Sheffield. The objective of the visit was to overcome the difficulties caused by a lack of experience on the part of boys beginning work in the pit. Boys were taught two days a week; given a lecture of an hour on the surface and then taken underground for three hours in the charge of a mining expert.
