Photograph by Lewis Carroll, inspired by Adelaide Proctor's popular poem. It was probably taken at the home of Henry Holiday, who illustrated Carroll's 'The Hunting of the Snark.' Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was the author of the classic childrens book 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1865). Carroll was one of a very small number of mainly British amateur photographers who excelled during the early years of photography. Albumen print.
