Long Boiler' locomotive, c 1845. Model (scale 1:8). This represents the type of locomotive patented by Robert Stephenson in 1841, and is known as the long boiler engine. Many of this type were built by R Stephenson and Co. The chief feature of the design was the placing of the rear axles under the boiler barrel, an arrangement which allowed the use of a larger boiler on an engine having a normal wheelbase. The boiler barrel was 38 inches in diameter and 12.33 feet long. 3/4 front side view.
