Planet' locomotive, 1830. Model (scale 1:8). This was designed and built by Robert Stephenson and Co for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, and was first used in December 1830, four months after the line's opening. Though following Robert Stephenson's 'Rocket' by little more than a year, Planet shows just how quickly the progress of steam locomotive design was at that time. Its success determined the main features of the British steam locomotive for many years to come. Side view on plinth.
