Santos-Dumont rounding the Eiffel Tower, c 1900s. Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian-born aeronaut was famous in France at the very end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th for his daring exploits in a balloon. He arrived in France in 1891 and soon became known for putting his dirigible airship through its paces over the city. This picture shows him flying one of his airships, probably the 'No 4', around the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
