Colour print made in 1965 by David Knight from the Whitbread Railway calendar, showing the Liverpool and Manchester Railway inauguration celebrations, 15 September 1830. Crowds of onlookers at have come to see the newly-opened railway. In the background is Edge Hill's Moorish Arch. George Stephenson became principal engineer of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the world's first intercity line, in 1826, and after a competition was organised in 1829 at Rainhill to determine the most efficient locomotive engine, Robert Stephenson's 'Rocket' was declared the winner.
