Marconi equipment installed in the East Goodwin Lightship, 1898. Gugliemo Marconi (1874- 1937), Italian-Irish radio pioneer whose inventiveness and business skills made radio communication a practical proposition. Marconi discovered a way in which waves could be used to send messages from one place to another without wires or cables, and in 1899 he succeeded in transmitting Morse code across the English Channel. During WWI he developed short-wave radio equipment capable of directional transmission over long distances, and by 1927 had established a worldwide radio telegraph network on behalf of the British government.
