Coloured lithograph by and after G Hawkins, showing the floating of the second tube. The Britannia Tubular Bridge, designed by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859), spans the Menai Straits, connecting Anglesey to Wales. The scene illustrated here is the floating of the second tube. This was then lifted into place using hydraulic presses, a process which took 17 days. The height of the bridge above the water at high tide is 103 feet. Printed by Day and Son and published July 1850.
