A model of the Santos-Dumont Airship No.VI of 1901 (scale 1:50). The Brazilian Albert Santos- Dumont did more than any man of his time to make the world air-minded. It was in this No.VI that on 19 October 1901 Santos claimed world attention by his famous flight from St Cloud, round the Eiffel Tower and back, in 29 minutes 31 seconds. Until then no airship had proved successful and this flight was the first time the public and officials had seen an air-flight success. They felt that the balloon had truly lost its wayward nature and become steerable at man's will rather than the wind's.
