The 'model village' of Saltaire was laid out by Sir Titus Salt (1803-1876) for the workers in his textile mills. Salts Mill opened in 1853 and employed 3000 workers. During the 1980s it was converted into shops, office space and galleries exhibiting the work of local artist David Hockney (born 1937).
