Between 1970 and 1984, London Transport (LT) came under the direct control of the Greater London Council (GLC) Livingstone's 'Fares Fair' initiative helped him win the 1981 GLC election. Livingstone (born 1945) was Leader of the (GLC) from 1981 until its abolition in 1986. He was elected Mayor of London in 2000. He had previously left the Labour party but was re-admitted in January 2004.
