'The first dead heat of the Olympic meeting was recorded at Wembley this afternoon in the finish of one od the semi-finals of the woman's 200 meter's, won Shirley Strickland (Australia) tied for the first place with Miss A. D Williamson (Great Britain). Miss D Robb (South Africa) was third.' London set new records with 59 countries and 4,099 athletes competing. The number of male competitors was down slightly, from 3,738 to 3,714, but the number of women increased from 328 to 385.
