Barefoot runner Budd (born South Africa 1966) was granted British citizenship so that she could compete in the 1984 Olympics, held in Los Angeles. In one of the most controversial events in Olympic history, a collision between Budd and American athlete Decker (born 1958) during the 3,000 metres final caused Decker to fall. Injured, she was unable to finish the race; Budd lost heart and finished in 7th place.
