Former Scotland international and Liverpool player Graeme Souness moved to Anfield in January 1978 and became Liverpool captain in 1981. He took over as manager from Kenny Dalglish in 1991 for three years. He was part of one of the most successful English football teams in the 1980s winning the League Championship, the League Cup and the European Cup. Souness made 358 appearances for Liverpool before moving to Sampdoria, Italy in 1984. His career as a manager also saw him work at Glasgow Rangers in 1987, Turkish club Galatasaray, Southampton, Torino, Benfica, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. Walter Smith was assistant manager at Rangers, taking over when Souness left.
