Sir Daniel Gooch (1816-1889) was a railway pioneer and inventor who trained with Robert Stephenson in Newcastle. He became the locomotive superintendent for the Great Western Railway in 1837 and was Chairman from 1865 to 1889. He designed many of the broad gauge locomotives that ran on this railway, including the 'Iron Duke'. He was also a Member of Parliament for Cricklade, near Swindon, Wiltshire, between 1865 and 1885.
