'General Eisenhower says farewell. General Dwight Eisenhower, supreme commander allied forces in Europe, and Mrs Eisenhower pictured after they had lunched with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and had been received by Queen Mary at Marlborough House this afternoon as part of ceremonies during Ike's farewell visit to London before handing over office and returning to the United States'. American general Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969) was supreme commander of allied forces in Europe during World War Two, and became 34th President of the United States. He and his wife Mamie (1896-1979) were married in 1916.
