Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) was Prime Minister of Britain from 1957 until 1963. Khrushchev (1894-1971) was premier of the USSR between 1958 and 1964, and first secretary of the Communist party (1953-1964). During a United Nations conference, Khrushchev interrupted a speech by Macmillan by pounding his shoe on the desk. Macmillan famously commented that he would like a translation.
