One of the giant Green Shield signs at the Tesco hypermarket at Irlam. The stamps, which were given to shoppers based on the size of their purchase, were collected in books. The books could be exchanged for a range of household goods; however prices rose to cover the costs of the scheme. Tesco was the first supermarket to abandon the stamps and other retailers were forced to follow suit.
