Description

LNER (London & North Eastern Railway) Class A1 4-6-2 No.4476 'Royal Lancer'. Built Doncaster 1923. First Pacific with reduced 'cut out' in cab side sheets. For details and side view see neg. 28/41. This engine was used as a model for the 'Gordon' character in the 'Thomas the Tank Engine' series of children's books written by Reverend W Awdry. The books were later adapted into a successful television series narrated by former Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr.
