Garland (1922-1969), seen here with her fifth husband, started performing as a young child. In 1939, aged 17, she starred in 'The Wizard of Oz'. Despite a successful Hollywood career, psychotropic drugs which she had originally been prescribed to control her weight, destroyed her mentally and physically. She married Mickey Deans, (born Michael DeVinko, 1934-2003) in 1969. She died of a drugs overdose in a London hotel three months later. Like their mother, her daughters Liza Minnelli (born 1946) and Lorna Luft (born 1953) are both actresses and singers.
