Portrait photograph by Henry Peach Robinson (1830-1901) of French photographer and sculptor Antoine Samuel Adam-Salomon (1818-1881). Robinson was extremely influential in nineteenth century photography circles and recognised as the founder of the English Pictorialist school. His subjects were anecdotal and often pastoral, though he created such scenes with use of backdrops, props and costumes in his studio. Robinson led a secession group of photographers away from the Royal Photographic Society and was a founder member of the Linked Ring Brotherhood in 1892.
