image details

Description
Photograph by Henry Peach Robinson (1830-1901), extremely influential in nineteenth century photography circles and recognised as the founder of the English Pictorialist school. Robinson learned combination printing from Rejlander: the piecing together of various images, blending the seams and re-photographing the assemblage. He easily surpassed his teacher, producing definitive photographs printed from up to nine negatives. His subjects were anecdotal and often pastoral, though he created such scenes with use of backdrops, props and costumes in his studio. Robinson led a secession group of photographers away from the Royal Photographic Society and was a founder member of the Linked Ring Brotherhood in 1892.
