Platinum print photograph by Frederick Hollyer (1837-1933) of John O'Leary (1830-1907). Born in Tipperary, Ireland, John O'Leary became involved in revolutionary politics as a student. He was arrested in 1865 during the Fenian troubles and sentenced to 20 years in exile. When he returned to Ireland he established himself at the centre of liberal nationalist circles in Dublin where he lived with his sister, the poetess Ellen O'Leary.
