Frederick George Smith sat at his desk in the Works Managers Office at Lochgorm, Inverness whilst working for the Highland Railway, in June/July 1911. The bowler hat on the shelf behind him denotes his middle management status. Behind him on the wall to the left is a Crompton of Chelmsford calendar, F.G. Smith having worked for Crompton's circa 1901/1902. Also on the wall behind is an image of the North East Railway Class R440, which was introduced in 1899. F. G. Smith had also worked for the North East Railway.
