Inside a London & North Eastern Railway first class carriage, about 1938. This carriage was built at York Carriage works. In the 1930s the railway companies were starting to adopt open plan carriages. Early carriages had compartments. Open plan carriages were introduced on Pullman cars in 1874, but most passengers preferred the privacy of their own compartment.
