Snow machine, about 1935. This machine was used to blow snow from the railway tracks. Snow is a particular hazard to the railways, because it can come suddenly and can drift quickly, burying trains, making wheels slip and causing severe delays. However, snowploughs mounted on locomotives were first used on the railways in the 1850s.
