Liverpool & Manchester Railway at Chat Moss, by T T Bury, February 1831. Chat Moss is a large area of bog between Liverpool and Manchester. When the L&MR was being planned, the proposed routes went around Chat Moss. However, George Stephenson thought it would be possible to built the railway through the bog. The track had to be built on wooden supports below the ground, so that it floated on the bog.
