The excavation of Olive Mount Cutting, Liverpool, on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, by T T Bury, February 1831. The cutting is two miles long and was the first extensive stone cutting to be built on a railway. Explosives were used to blast out the rock. Building cuttings was very dangerous and many people died during their construction.
