Churchward was the Chief Mechanical Engineer at Swindon works from 1902 to 1921. He designed many locomotives, using foreign influences to build more powerful engines. Churchward died in 1933, having been killed by an express train in Swindon. He lived close to the main railway line and often walked along it, but he was deaf and could not hear that a train was coming.
