Miners and their families waiting for a train at Talbot Road Station, Blackpool, 21 June 1919. The miners travelled to Blackpool to take part in a meeting of the Lancashire & Cheshire Miners Federation. They demanded a shorter day, a 30% wage increase and nationalised coal mines. Coal mining unions formed close alliances with railway trade unions in the early twentieth century. This photograph was taken by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's advertising department whose trains transported the miners to Blackpool. Special trains had to be put on for the large numbers of people attending.
