An A3 Pacific class 4-6-0 locomotive number 2568 "Sceptre", about 1935. Pacifics were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in the 1920s and 1930s and were built at Doncaster works. These powerful locomotives could haul trains at an average speed of 80 miles per hour, but gave a smooth ride. They were used on services between London and Scotland.
