Class J72 0-6-0T locomotive number 68735 on Scarborough Bridge, York, by E R Wethersett, 15 August 1948. The locomotive is pulling freight to the freight terminal at Foss Islands, on the other side of York. Tank engines did not need a separate tender for water and coal. They could either push or pull trains, which meant that they did not have to be turned around on a turntable at the end of their journey. They were usually used on local lines.
