Description

Liberal Democrat protesters at York station by Chris Hogg, 26 October 1991. They are protesting against the privatisation of the railways, and are going to London to join a demonstration. The railways were privatised under the Conservative government in the mid 1990s. Plans to privatise the railways were started under Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. Legislation to enable private companies to operate rail services was passed in 1992, under John Major. However, many people opposed the privatisation of the railways.
