Diesel locomotive number 40084 in York, by Chris Hogg, August 1987. This locomotive, which was pulling a freight train, had been derailed. Accidents at this time were not as common as they had been in the early days of the railways, as safety measures had been put in place. Trains were equipped with good brakes and safety checks were carried out regularly along the track. However, accidents did still occur due to brake or signal failure, or broken track.
