Inside the cafe at Malton station, North Yorkshire, 1981. This station is on the line between York and Scarborough. The canteen is selling drinks and snacks. Until the 1960s some stations had restaurants which served full meals with a table service. However, services became faster, and journey times were cut. This largely cut out the need to serve full meals, as people preferred to eat a snack, and have a full meal before or after their journey.
