Durham Viaduct, by Chris Hogg, 12 March 1989. The viaduct has scaffolding on it. At this time workers were carrying out maintenance and construction work on the viaduct. The viaduct is just outside Durham Station. Durham got its first station in the 1840s, but the main station was opened in 1857. The lines around Durham were principally used to carry coal from the coalfields to the docks at Newcastle or Stockton.
