British Rail Royal Mail depot at Southampton, by Chris Hogg, 1996. The railways have always carried mail. Post Office trains had been used since the coming of the railways. The letters were often sorted in the train and dropped off at their destination. However, Post Office trains were withdrawn on 10 January 2004, due to a decline in the numbers of services required.
