Electric tram in Bury, Greater Manchester, by Lynn Patrick, 1996. Trams were first used in Britain in the 1850s in Liverpool. Early trams were pulled by horses although some trams were steam driven. By the 1880s electric tramways were being developed and by the First World War all large towns and cities had tram systems, usually run by the town or city council. Tram systems were phased out in the 1950s, but have been reintroduced in towns such as Sheffield and Manchester.
