Description

Diesel powered passenger train on Alness Viaduct, Scottish Highlands, by Lynn Patrick, 2001. This viaduct is on the line between Thurso and Inverness. The line, formerly on the Highland Railway, opened in 1863. It was heavily used in summer by tourists, but often blocked in winter by heavy snow. It was also used for carrying food and livestock.
