A class 12 AR locomotive number 2127 on a bridge and a class 23 locomotive number 2566, by Patrick Ransome-Wallis. The last steam locomotives in South Africa were manufactured in 1955, although steam traction was phased out slowly. Many South African locomotives were built in Europe although by the mid 20th century more were being made by local workshops.
