Description

A class S1 locomotive number 3820 being used for shunting, by Patrick Ransome-Wallis. The last steam locomotives in South Africa were manufactured in 1955, although steam traction was phased out slowly. Many South African locomotives were built in Europe although by the mid 20th century more were being made by local workshops.
